If you are on Facebook, you can follow their work at : Family and Friends of Mt. Vernon Cemetery
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. If you would like to provide your email address here, I can give you further information about Julia in general. We have not as yet located a diary, by the way, either of Julia or Bertrand, or of the students traveling along with.
Deb Artmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01896209273324721106noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9091026817968807873.post-77438111796939380272020-06-25T03:14:40.075-07:002020-06-25T03:14:40.075-07:00The cemetery is still in GREAT disrepair!!!The cemetery is still in GREAT disrepair!!!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11776915558856318074noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9091026817968807873.post-86908332757313015582015-12-06T11:19:56.279-08:002015-12-06T11:19:56.279-08:00This is Deb Artman, cousin of Donn Hall, contribut...This is Deb Artman, cousin of Donn Hall, contributor above. My understanding it is believed to have been a heart attack that was cause of Julia's death on the desert, suffered after the attack. Julia and Bertrand Gardel did bring along on the tour several female students of the "Ladies Seminary" in Philadelphia, where Julia was Principal. I am not aware of a diary within our family but it makes sense that one did (or does) exist. Julia and Bertrand did co-write a book that I find interesting entitled "Conversations on Italy in French and English. The book can be found on-line here: https://books.google.com/books?id=zpc-AAAAYAAJ.
Julia Hawkes Gardel was prominent educator, and prior to her position in Philadelphia and marriage to Bertrand, was close friend and teacher at school where Catherine Beecher, sister of Harriet Beecher Stowe, was principal. Many suffered injuries but a death was rare. Is anything known about the details of the tour on which she died? Any other previous tours to the region? Most of these travellers seemed to keep extensive journals - has any survived or the Gardels or letters home which were often as detailed?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18014009529709963326noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9091026817968807873.post-19414835801604763232013-02-15T09:10:39.791-08:002013-02-15T09:10:39.791-08:00Donn, are you in the Philadelphia area? I'm wondering if your family is aware of the poor groundskeeping at the cemetery? It's locked and no visitors are allowed.StoneAngels: The Cemetery Travelerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02776945637111478231noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9091026817968807873.post-4125658175639346572012-06-12T12:07:32.072-07:002012-06-12T12:07:32.072-07:00This is a well known story in my family. Bertrand Gardel died over 30 years after his wife but left his opulent household furnishings to Julia's favorite niece who was married to George Shipman of Chicago (who founded the Foundlings Home on Wood St.) and furnished the Orphanage/Unwed Mother's home with the inheritance of Mr. Gardel.Donn Hallnoreply@blogger.com
