I spent a lot of time in my youth riding bikes throughout that area. The issue that got my attention was a subject that you did not address: It is deadly to wander through old cemetaries.
This past July, I was staying in Park City, Utah. Our condo was one hundred feet from a cemetary where local miners and their families were buried. My daughter and I explored the grounds and often took a "short cut" to meet friends. On the third day of our visit, we noticed the cemetary had yellow police tape and was closed!
A photographer and his family were walking through the cemetary when a very large tombstone fell on top of his child!
The tragic event made national news.
I would gladly contribute to a fund to restore the cemetary to today's safety standards after learning about a tragic death of a child.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9091026817968807873.post-12860365230778140382012-08-12T12:54:57.676-07:002012-08-12T12:54:57.676-07:00I stumbled upon this cemetery this morning. If the cost is too high for Beth David perhaps they could coordinate a cleanup with the surrounding congregations? Volunteers could accomplish it in a couple of weekends. What a mitzvah for the army of 13 year olds in Lower Merion.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9091026817968807873.post-71702799793144560932012-08-02T03:09:18.223-07:002012-08-02T03:09:18.223-07:00Thank you Ed for wonderful article. I have spent more than 20 years documenting and writing about abandoned Jewish cemeteries and heritage sites in eastern Europe -- but Gladwyne is only a few miles from where I grew up in suburban Phila. It is fascinating to visit it through your blog and see how it inspires the same reaction as do the abandoned places in eastern Europe.
