Dissatisfied with its militaristic form of government, Mr. Severs decided to emigrate to America, the land of Freedom. " Bless this country but dam the laws; I'm going to America. Their eldest child , Henry Clontz Severs was born shipboard November 2, 1842, in the Charleston harbor in sight of Sullivans Island. He was naturalized on September 17, 1849. In 1850 the Severs family left Charleston and moved to Charlotte North Carolina. On coming to Charlotte, Mr. Severs opened a grocery store on west trade street . Later he bought a large tract of land west of the city and engaged in farming.
